“Nostalgic for Now” is a six-song collection that is very personal for indie folk wizard Patrick Lawrence. This EP encapsulates six chapters of his life, encompassing self-realization, love, career choices, loss, happiness, and reminiscence of the good old days. And he really pours every inch of himself into this soul-grabbing collection that was written from a place of vulnerability, tenderness, and strength. The raw emotions in his sweet-sounding voice glide gently over the ear-catching productions that consist of smoothly plucked guitars and other percussive instruments that pertain to the genre appeal of folk and the stylistic flexibility of roots sound.
“Toaster Song” is what gets things started. This track actually features a healthy concoction of the guitar, bass, and drums, providing a captivating backdrop that delightfully complements the spotlight-stealing vocals. Patrick’s warm vocals vividly paint images, showcasing his prowess in visual storytelling. The lines, “I don’t know where I’m going, but I hope once I get there, I’ll know” are so powerful and resonated with me on a personal level. “Forever Home” is a soul-grabbing ballad that was actually penned for Patrick’s wedding. This song captures the profound emotions of genuine love and affection for someone else. The gentle and mellow production wraps around the lyrics like a warm embrace and ignites a certain kind of fire from within a listener that reminds them of what it is like to fall deeply in love with someone!
“Half Life” is another deeply personal tune that sees Patrick reflect on the burnout caused by his medical career. The tuneful guitar lays the foundation, with Patrick’s lyrical prowess bringing depth to the narrative. Lines such as “Tired of this half-life, I don’t know how it went wrong…and I guess I’ve always known this is not what I want” poignantly capture a man questioning his life choices, pondering the paths taken and not taken.
