Obichukwu Alfred-Igbokwe, who goes professionally as Obi Alfred, was born in New Jersey but raised in Houston, Texas. He has always possessed an insatiate passion for music but didn’t start fueling this till he went to college in San Francisco with music as the creative and emotional outlet for whatever it was that was happening in his life, including a gut-wrenching breakup and adjusting to life in an unfamiliar city. He is an R&B phenomenon and has grown during the golden eras, and he was, of course, influenced by some of the best R&B singers. He wants his music to reflect the nostalgia of the yesteryears while also giving it a modern facelift so as to fit in both worlds – he is, in a way, bridging the gap between generations!
Making the next huge step towards the realization of his music dreams, Obi Alfred has just released his debut single, “Mind,” from his upcoming EP that is in its final touches. Well, “Mind” is an upbeat and club-inspired R&B that a listener would find easy to dance along to!
The blend between the drums, the keyboard, the arresting percussion, and the steady bassline is complemented by Obi Alfred’s velvety and warm vocals that rest at the touchstone of the nostalgic R&B, just like we remember it. The lyrics are emotionally relatable and reflect the ecstasy that love brings along. That feeling of being intoxicated with love, burning passion, and desire such that you feel trapped in your own mind and caught up and cannot get over that deep feeling of love!
The melodies are arresting. Obi Alfred’s sensual delivery with his smooth-talking vocals is more addicting! I also enjoyed how towards the end of this song, the beat is switched to allow some climaxing hip-hop-like melodicism – very hypnotic.
“Mind” has gotten off to a very acclaimed start with more than 64K Spotify streams to its name in such a short period – it is little surprise why; “Mind” really is an authentic masterpiece in R&B music transcendence and the way Obi Alfred puts his heart and soul in this performance is genuinely admirable!
