The song imagines an encounter with plasma beings, or biblically accurate angels, arriving with the message, “Be not afraid.” From there, King of Cups turn the encounter into a moral question. If these beings could look across humanity and examine everything we have done, what would they see? What would they say about us?
The concept expanded when Shaun’s wife encouraged the band to weave plasma into the song’s broader meaning. That suggestion opened the idea beyond spirituality and mortality, allowing plasma to become a metaphor for human connection itself.
As the most abundant and highly energized state of matter, plasma becomes a fitting symbol for humanity’s shared existence. In an increasingly digital world, people remain linked through invisible networks and frequencies, continually exchanging ideas, emotions, trauma, energy, and hope. We may experience ourselves as isolated sparks, yet together those individual lives form something larger, a “global ghost” moving through an interconnected human consciousness.

Clocking in at 4:26, “As One Global Ghost” begins in an ethereal, floating atmosphere that suggests the vastness of space.
